How much editing is done on a pin up photo?

Firstly, it needs to be noted that most of the transformation into a classic beauty is done during the first hour of the pin up shoot booking – make up application and hair styling. As you can see from the before (2010) and after (1950) shots.

During the shoot, I ‘poke and prod’ the model into the pose I think works best for their figure. You may have heard me mention in the past, I will always make you point your toes and make your legs look good! Apparently, this can be a bit of a work out – compared once to Pilates – posing like a pin up can be pretty hard work. No slouching here!

Then – how much editing occurs once the images make it to the computer?

My aim isn’t to make you unrecognisable to yourself or your peers. But I do like to help a sister out!

As a standard, I always remove blemishes that might be on arms / legs (where no make up has been applied) and any scars. If there are any noticable “underwear” lines, they get removed too, this includes the bumps created by underwear which usually occur when sitting. If necessary, for the mature ladies – I reshape the upper arm. Then I add my trademark ‘skin smoothening glamouriser’!

Finally, I more often than not give the image a “virtual waist cincher”. In the 40s and 50s, ladies wore body shaping undergarments everyday, which consisted of waist cinchers or corsets. This brought their waists in between 2 to 4 inches!

Isn’t this deceiving? Let’s put it into context:

I’m not shooting for a skin anti-aging advertisement, I’m shooting for pin up glamour! Even the pin up masters of the era did a little pin & tuck when they created their illustrations. The method may have changed but the idea is still the same. Here are examples of master Gil Elvgren, using photographs to base his illustrations on:
