This is really about “mind tricks” – how we perceive things to look as opposed to the way they really are.
For example, when there is no negative space between your torso and arms, your body looks wider than if you were to bend your elbows and bring them out to the side. Creating the negative space separates the torso from your arms and the total body width looks as it should.
Adding to that – by bending your knee, you can create a shapely body.
